Expansion of RI Perinatal Hepatitis Prevention Program
Rhode Island became the first state in the nation to address the prevalence of the Hepatitis C virus by expanding the Rhode Island Perinatal Hepatitis Prevention Program to include case management services for pregnant women and new mothers with the virus. The program is coordinated through a collaboration of the Women & Infants' Center for Women's Gastrointestinal Disorders, the State of Rhode Island, and the Pediatric Liver Clinic at Hasbro Children's Hospital.
Glenn Close event raises more than $1 million
Women & Infants has announced that the 2006 Celebrity Luncheon featuring theater, film and television actress Glenn Close raised in excess of $1 million. Proceeds from the event, attended by more than 1,100 people and touted to be the most successful fundraiser in the hospital's history, will benefit the current campaign to raise in the range of $20 million to construct a state-of-the-art NICU and additional inpatient obstetric beds.

We believe that every baby deserves prenatal care for a healthy start in life. Women who don't take proper care of themselves and their babies, including receiving prenatal care, are more likely to have infants with a low birth weight, who are stillborn, or die in the first year of life. Guide to mental health services now available
Butler Hospital has created a user-friendly Community Guide to Mental Healthcare in Rhode Island. The guide lists treatment providers throughout the state by city or town and includes their contact information, types of insurance they accept, and their treatment specialty areas. Falls-prevention program underway at VNA of Care New England
Steady Strides helps prevent falls and fall-related injuries for older adults who struggle with balance trouble, muscle weakness, decreased vision, Parkinson’s disease, decreased bone strength, and other risk factors for falling. Services include home safety assessment and modification, therapeutic exercise, gait training balance activities, tai chi, anodyne therapy for increasing circulation and reducing pain, and patient and caregiver education. Women & Infants Offers Intense Chemotherapy for Ovarian Cancer
Our Program in Women's Oncology now offers a more intense chemotherapy treatment for women with advanced ovarian cancer. The program is the only facility in the area to offer intraperitoneal therapy, which is the NCI urges doctors to pursue with their patients. The treatment is discussed in the latest edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Dietary supplement being studied for treatment of major depression
The Mood Disorders Research Clinic at Butler Hospital has a new study comparing the effectiveness and safety of an over-the-counter dietary supplement, SAMe, vs a standard FDA-approved antidepressant for treatment of major depression.
