Fracture Care

Fracture care involves the treatment of all broken bones, from minor to serious. Whether admitted through our emergency department or seen at another urgent care or walk-in clinic, our orthopedic specialists can treat every type of broken bone with care and expertise. We will recommend an individualized treatment plan to get you healed in a way that fits your needs and your lifestyle with the best outcomes.

The treatment needed for most fractures is to immobilize the bone which allows it to heal. This can be done with different techniques depending on your fracture:

Casting and splinting: Some fractures can be immobilized by applying a cast or a splint to stabilize the area. Sometimes a brace or a prefabricated boot can provide the immobilization needed. If the broken bone has moved or is out of position, it may need to be set back in place or “reduced” to ensure a successful outcome. Orthopedic surgeons are experts in setting fractures both in the office and the operating room so they can heal properly.

Internal fixation: Some fractures are better treated surgically with the use of plates, screws, rods, or wires to perfectly align the bone and rigidly hold it in order to heal properly. Our experts can tell you when this is required or more beneficial to you.

External fixation: Some fractures require putting pins and rods into the broken bone and attaching them outside of the body to provide optimal treatment. This is usually associated with fractures involving extensive skin damage or infection.

Healing: When a fracture occurs, there is bleeding of the bone which turns into a clot. A collection of cells migrate to the fracture site and a “callus” around the break which starts to make new bone that eventually heals the fracture. If the bone ends are not closely aligned or if the bone’s blood supply is damaged, the bone cannot heal properly. Fixation and immobilization are important but healing also depends on good health and nutrition. Calcium and Vitamin D are necessary for healing. Smoking is a major threat to healing as are certain health conditions like diabetes.

Foot and Ankle Surgery

Orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons are physicians who have a completed medical school, advanced “head to toe” orthopedic training, and advanced surgical fellowships devoted to the foot and ankle. Our experts offer comprehensive surgical and non-surgical treatment of foot and ankle disorders and trauma.
