President and Chief Executive Officer, Care New England
James E. Fanale, MD, currently serves as president and chief executive officer for Care New England. Prior to arriving at Care New England, Dr. Fanale served as senior vice president for system development and chief operating officer at Jordan Hospital in Massachusetts.
Since assuming his leadership role in January 2018, Dr. Fanale has helped to lead CNE through its most challenging days, focusing on rebuilding CNE’s financial foundation, establishing an aggressive strategy for stabilization and growth, and energizing the more than 7,000 staff and clinicians. He has helped achieve extraordinary results by building a high-performing management team and engaging all employees through open, transparent, and regular communication.
With his guidance, CNE has now shifted from incurring significant operating losses to making small, but important financial earnings. This is all being realized with a system-wide focus on quality and patient safety. Through Dr. Fanale’s leadership, other results include the creation of Care New England Medical Group, a unified system of 500 health care providers with expanded access to a wide array of primary care physicians, surgeons, and specialty services.
While at Jordan Hospital, he was responsible for the development of one of the nation's first Medicare Shared Savings Programs – Accountable Care Organizations (ACO). He created and implemented programs involving population health management, was responsible for the overall operations of the system, and assisted in the merger of Jordan Hospital into Beth Israel Medical Center. He also advanced key relationships with health plans and the physician networks to pioneer both the clinical and management aspects of health care in the accountable care environment.
During his tenure here at CNE, he was responsible for developing the Integra ACO, including the establishment of Integra as a Medicaid Accountable Entity (AE), serving more than 140,000 individuals, while generating Medicare savings of more than $30 million over the last four years. In addition, Integra has achieved one of the highest quality ratings awarded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and continues to outperform all Medicare ACOs across the region.
Dr. Fanale earned his medical degree from Chicago Medical School and completed his residency at UMass Memorial Medical Center. In addition to his leadership role at CNE, he also serves as an associate professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Fanale is a fellow in the American College of Physicians and the American Geriatrics Society, and is a past president and chair of the board of the American Geriatrics Society.
